Terror struck me at the thought of my youngest son sharing this prayer request in Sunday School.
“Please pray for my mom, she sleeps with everyone” or just sharing the simple statement,
“My mom sleeps around”.
I have been around enough kids to know the kinds of prayer request kids share. Often times they share something very simple, however, the choice of words they use can cause the most innocent request to be twisted and come out in strange ways.
It was one of those long nights with little sleep.
What started this train of thought? My youngest son had been a little jealous of the attention that his older brother was getting due to a tonsillectomy. One morning he approached me with his hand on his hip and said, “I see that you slept with Clayton last night”.
To which I responded, “Yes, last night I slept with everyone!
I started in the guest room with Clayton, went to my bed with Daddy, got up and slept with you because you had a bad dream, and then crashed on the couch with Callie (our cat).” He smiled at the thought that I had laid down with him and then skipped away.
I remember sneaking into my parent’s room at night and standing beside my mom while she slept.
Eventually my staring would seer into her brain, she would sense that something was wrong and sit up in bed gasping for breath. My dad usually sat up swinging punches so I didn’t frequent his side of the bed more than once:). Don’t worry, he missed. A parent’s knack for knowing something is wrong in the night reminds me of my favorite childhood books, Madeline. Mrs. Clavel would jump up in the night because she knew when something was not right!
Have you ever had a night like that?
I’m sure you have. Late nights with sick kids, bad dreams, or thoughts you can’t shake are all part of being a parent. That is why we have to stick together and help one another out when we see another parent sleeping in the car rider line or falling asleep at a long traffic light.
Sometimes you just have to sleep around and catch a few winks when you can.
I am thankful that I have a Daddy who never sleeps!
Aren’t you glad that we have a parent who never sleeps! How could He possibly with all His needy children all over the world!
Our Heavenly Father never sleeps, because He doesn’t need too!
Here are some reason why we need to sleep.
- to give our bodies time to repair and heal
- to download, and sift through events of the day (keeping what we need and tossing out the rest)
God, our source, doesn’t need sleep. He is always there eager to answer when His children call on Him for love, comfort, wisdom or advice. Even in the middle of the night we can lift our eyes to the mountain of God and the Son will rise to meet us!
I will lift up my eyes to the mountains where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip – he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. Psalms 121:1-4 NIV
Our Heavenly Father watches over us like an overprotective parent and I for one am thankful!
- He shades me with His right hand
- H keeps me from harm’s way day and night
- He will continue to watch over my coming and going for the rest of my life and then some!
Wow! Now that is a promise I will hold Him to.
So rest easy mom’s and dad’s.
Just as God watches over us, He is also watching over our kiddos too!
See you in the car line!
Zzzzzzzzz,
Madaline
