Searching for the King of Christmas
There is something mysterious and wonderful about the Christmas season. It is a time when the hearts of man are drawn to search for the King.
A King-sized hole:
Have you ever wondered what made the wise men travel such a long way away from their homes to see baby Jesus? Scholars believe the journey was so long that it took a couple of years to get there. And I thought an 8 hour road trip to Florida with my boys in the back of the van (doing what brothers do on long trips) took forever!
Can you imagine being away from your family, friends and your own bed for possibly a 4 year round trip?
What would possess someone to do that? Just to go see a baby.
Now, I know grandparents will travel extremely long distances to go and see a new grand baby but traveling what seemed half way around the world to see a child that you don’t even know? Why? Because they had to. There was something inside of them that made them.
They were searching for the King.
Some translations refer to these travelers as kings themselves. They had to be extremely wealthy to afford such a trip. That type of journey would have called for a caravan in order to travel safely. That’s expensive. So, once again, why would someone who seemed to have everything they could possibly want (in terms of wealth) travel such a long distance to see a baby?
They had to! I believe they had a King-Sized hole inside that drove them to go and find this new born King. In fact, I also believe that we are all born with that same longing inside of us.
A King-sized fit:
God created mankind for fellowship. We were literally created to be with God. Try as we might, nothing else can take the place of a relationship with our Divine Creator. Believe me–I’ve tried.
As a prodigal I spent many years trying to fill the hole inside of me with earthly things but nothing worked. Everything always left me empty and longing for that special something to fill the void inside of me.
Until I reestablished my relationship with my King, it was like I was wandering in the darkness looking for a light. When I finally surrendered and gave myself back to Jesus, I became whole again.
I needed my King. Nothing else would suffice. As I think about those wise men traveling from afar searching for the King, I believe their missing piece was found in Bethlehem the moment they bowed down in front of the child Jesus.
A King-sized worship:
If we were to stop and think about it, we all have a desire to worship someone or something. It’s part of that longing inside of us:
- Some people worship sports teams. They build shrines and wave banners to honor their teams.
- Some people worship money and possessions. It’s all they think about.
- Some people even worship other people like celebrities, athletes or even loved ones.
We can’t help it. We were created to worship. Maybe that’s why people are so intrigued with Great Britains’s “Royals.”
We need to worship.
I’m sure some of us are thinking I don’t really worship those things but anything that is more important than God is an idol and idols are made for worshiping.
My prayer this Christmas is for my family and for all of us that we will yield to the desire to worship and, just as the wise men did over 2000 years ago, bow before the King of Kings our Lord and Savior Jesus. He is worthy of all our worship.
I hope this song will inspire that worship in you this season.
I hope you enjoy it!

David, the worship song was amazing! Thank you for writing a song that perfectly describes our longing for the King of Kings and the joy and peace we experience when we find what our heart so longs for. This has truly blessed me.
